India’s first MedTech University to open soon at Visakhapatnam’s AMTZ

India’s first MedTech University is set to open at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam. The new institution is expected to mark an important step in healthcare education and research.

The university will function from a five-storey, globe-shaped glass building unveiled by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in July 2024. The striking structure has already become a landmark inside the industrial zone. Developed under a public-private partnership, the university will focus on specialised training and innovation in medical technology.

It will offer MBA, M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes, along with certifications in medical technology and regulatory affairs. Officials said the courses were designed in consultation with global industry leaders to match international standards.

“This university will bridge the gap between academia and industry. Students will not only study theory but also gain hands-on experience through AMTZ’s ecosystem,” said an AMTZ official.

Doctors in the city have welcomed the move. “Medical technology is now central to modern healthcare. Training students at this level and scale will help transform the sector,” said Dr. Anitha Rao, a Visakhapatnam-based cardiologist.

Industry voices also see the project as a boost to Vizag’s growing MedTech profile. “Nearly 150 companies are already active at AMTZ. Adding a university will complete the ecosystem of learning, research, and manufacturing,” said Mohammed Yaseen, Managing Partner of Blue Nile Developers.

Experts believe the institution could play a global role. “Healthcare worldwide depends on affordable and scalable innovation. This university can help Vizag emerge as an international hub for MedTech collaboration,” said Prof. K. Ramesh, a researcher in health technology.

Detailed programme structures and course guidelines are expected to be announced in the coming months.
