Indian Railways Launches “Round Trip Package” with 20% Discount for Festival Travel

Indian Railways has launched a new “Round Trip Package.” Consequently, passengers receive a 20% discount on return tickets booked along with onward journeys during the festival season. The scheme started on August 14, 2025. Therefore, it aims to reduce rush, simplify bookings, and improve train utilization in both directions.

The discount applies only to confirmed tickets in the same class and route for both journeys. Specifically, onward travel must take place between October 13 and 26, while return travel must occur between November 17 and December 1. Passengers can book onward journeys immediately. Then, they can use the “connecting journey” option to book the return ticket.

Moreover, the 20% rebate applies only to the base fare of the return journey. Both tickets must include the same passengers with identical details and class. In addition, bookings must follow the same mode—either online or at railway counters. Modifications or refunds are not allowed. The scheme covers all trains and classes, including special trains. However, it excludes Flexi fare services. Likewise, discounts through travel coupons, vouchers, passes, or PTOs do not apply to return tickets.

Railway officials explained that the scheme is experimental. Thus, it aims to spread passenger traffic evenly, reduce peak-season congestion, and improve train operations.

Passengers have welcomed the move. For instance, K Saranya from MVP Colony said, “This is fantastic! We were planning our Diwali trip, and the discount makes it much easier on the pocket.” Similarly, Ravi Kumar from Vizianagaram added, “I often travel home for festivals, and this will encourage me to book in advance.”

Nevertheless, some passengers expressed caution. S Prabhu from Seethammadhara remarked, “It’s useful, but the no-refund rule could be tricky if plans change.” Meanwhile, a family from Railway New Colony noted, “We usually struggle to get return tickets after the festival. This scheme will definitely reduce that stress.” College student Sameer said, “I think it’s a smart idea. Hopefully, the online system doesn’t crash with all the bookings at once.”

Overall, the Round Trip Package is expected to promote advance bookings, reduce crowding at ticket counters, and ensure smoother train operations during the festival season.
