Visakhapatnam to Host Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved converting a modern Super ECBC-compliant building in the city into a Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition (CoEET), marking a major step in the state’s push for clean energy. The decision was announced at the recent Andhra Pradesh Power Coordination Committee (APPCC) meeting, with funding support from APGENCO and APTRANSCO.

The CoEET will serve as a hub for renewable energy research, skill development, startup incubation, and policy guidance. “This initiative positions Andhra Pradesh as a leader in India’s energy transition journey,” said an official from the Energy Department.

The centre will bring together power sector organisations, academic institutions, think tanks, industries, and startups. Its core focus areas include renewable energy, energy storage, smart grids, electric vehicle charging, green hydrogen, and AI applications in grid operations.

Over the next five years, CoEET plans to carry out more than 20 research projects and field pilots, support the launch of at least 10 energy startups, and provide policy guidance at both state and national levels. The General Body, led by the Special Chief Secretary (Energy), will feature CMDs and MDs of major utilities along with representatives from universities and think tanks.

The facility will house an innovation lab, research and development workspace, classrooms, seminar halls, a startup incubation bay, and digital twin and smart grid simulation facilities. Officials said the centre will position Visakhapatnam as a major hub for clean energy innovation in the country.

“The CoEET is a strategic step for Andhra Pradesh to lead India’s clean energy transition. By combining technology, policy, and talent, we are creating a model for other states to follow,” the official added.
