Pharmacists play bigger role in modern healthcare, says GIMSR Pro VC

Quality pharmacy education is key to preparing professionals for today’s complex healthcare challenges, said Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane, Pro Vice-Chancellor of GIMSR. She spoke at the World Pharmacists Day celebrations held under the theme “Think Health, Think Pharmacist.”

Dr. Gitanjali said pharmacists now do more than dispense medicines. They counsel patients, provide clinical support, and contribute to public health programs. She added that pharmacy education must evolve to tackle complex diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and innovations in drug development.

She urged students to develop critical thinking and research skills and stressed the importance of ethics in practice. By staying updated on global trends and participating in collaborative research, pharmacists can make a meaningful impact on healthcare.

Mr. Nilesh R. Patel, Head of Sterile Operations at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in drug discovery, manufacturing, and clinical care. He encouraged students to adopt AI tools and follow international pharmacy standards.

Prof. L. Srinivas, Principal of GITAM School of Pharmacy, said pharmacists are crucial for resilient healthcare systems. He emphasized their role in fighting antimicrobial resistance and addressing climate-related health challenges.

The event brought together faculty, researchers, and students. Their participation reflected GIMSR’s ongoing commitment to advancing pharmacy education and promoting healthcare excellence.
