Waltair Division Turns Scrap into Art to Promote Sustainability

The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway is transforming discarded locomotive parts into striking works of art, blending creativity with sustainability. During the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwada, the division showcased its Best from Waste initiatives, which are designed to promote environmental awareness and resource conservation.

Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra praised the efforts, saying, “The work of our staff at the Electric Loco Shed highlights how creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand.” He added, “These initiatives not only beautify railway premises but also convey a strong social message on recycling and waste management.”

At the Electric Loco Shed in Visakhapatnam, scrap materials have been repurposed into artistic installations that showcase innovation, national pride, and environmental responsibility. A pair of peacocks, India’s national bird, was crafted using air compressor valves, washers, bearing balls, and axle spring shims, demonstrating how industrial waste can be creatively reused.

Another key installation is a Make in India lion, built from MS sheets, nylon pinions, HV valves, and OCB panels. The lion symbolizes industrial strength and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, reflecting the division’s commitment to self-reliance.

“These projects go beyond decorative value,” Mr. Bohra noted. “They promote waste-to-art innovation, sustainable practices, and awareness about recycling.” Staff involved expressed enthusiasm, with one senior official saying, “Turning scrap into art was challenging but rewarding. Knowing our work spreads awareness about sustainability makes it worthwhile.”

The Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwada campaign actively engages railway employees and visitors through interactive displays and educational exhibits. By encouraging creative reuse of materials, the Waltair Division fosters wider community participation in environmental conservation, demonstrating that sustainability and innovation can coexist.

Through these initiatives, the Waltair Division is setting an example for other railway divisions, promoting a cleaner, greener environment while celebrating creativity and national pride.
