VPA Fast-Tracks Cargo Growth, Hits 60MMT Ahead of Schedule

Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has clocked a cargo throughput of 60 million metric tonnes (MMT) within 249 days of the ongoing financial year 2025–26, marking a faster pace of cargo handling compared to previous years. A statement issued here on Saturday noted that the port had reached the same volume in 273 days during the 2024–25 period and in 275 days during the 2023–24 period.

Officials said the quicker turnaround highlights improved operational efficiency and rising trade volumes routed through Visakhapatnam. Chairperson M. Angamuthu said the achievement comes in the backdrop of volatile global trade conditions and logistical challenges faced by major ports worldwide.

According to him, VPA’s performance has been driven by targeted measures, including attracting alternative cargo streams, upgrading infrastructure, and overhauling internal processes. Strengthening collaboration with shipping lines, cargo handlers, exporters, and importers has also contributed to smoother operations.

Angamuthu said the port is now aiming to handle 90MMT of cargo before the end of March. He expressed confidence that continued investments, digital adoption, and coordination with trade partners will help the port sustain its momentum.

Industry observers say VPA’s growth reflects rising demand for port services on the east coast and strengthens Visakhapatnam’s position as a preferred gateway for mineral exports, container cargo, and energy shipments. The port is expected to step up capacity expansion and technological upgrades in line with future traffic projections.
