17,000 Runners from India and Abroad Take Part in 10th Vizag Navy Marathon

As many as 17,000 runners from India and abroad participated in the 10th edition of the Vizag Navy Marathon held in Visakhapatnam on December 14, highlighting the event’s growing scale and international appeal. Athletes from 17 foreign countries took part, marking the highest participation in the marathon’s history.

The full marathon (42 km) was flagged off by Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, who also presided over the prize distribution ceremony. Mrs. Priya Bhalla, President of the Naval Wives Welfare Association (Eastern Region), started the half-marathon and the Sankalp Run. The 10 km and 5 km races were flagged off by the District Collector, M. N. Harendhira Prasad, and the Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi, respectively.

Prize money exceeding Rs 0 lakh was awarded across various categories. The event was attended by senior naval officers, veterans, officials from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, and representatives of partner organisations, including State Bank of India and Indian Oil Corporation Limited.

Organisers said meticulous planning and close coordination with the district administration, city police, and local volunteers ensured the smooth conduct of the marathon. This year’s edition also introduced enhanced runner benefits, including discounts and comprehensive insurance cover for all participants.

With steadily rising overseas participation, the Vizag Navy Marathon is emerging as one of the prominent long-distance running events in the region.
