HSL Lays Keel for Tugs to Boost Visakhapatnam Port Efficiency

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) on Sunday marked two significant milestones with the keel laying of the first 60-ton bollard pull tug for the Visakhapatnam Port Authority and the signing of a contract for the construction of a second tug of the same capacity.

The indigenously designed and built vessels will modernise the port’s tug fleet, supporting safer and more efficient handling of vessels as maritime traffic grows. The project aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The 32.5-metre-long tug will have a bollard pull capacity of 60 tonnes, improving manoeuvrability, operational safety, and reducing turnaround time at the port. Visakhapatnam Port Authority Chairperson Dr. Madhaiyaan Angamuthu said timely delivery and quality workmanship were vital in building confidence between institutions.

HSL Chairman and Managing Director Cmde Girideep Singh thanked the Visakhapatnam Port Authority and technology partners Vedam and Solas Marine for their support, highlighting HSL’s technical capability and commitment to indigenous shipbuilding.

The event showcased the partnership between HSL and the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, aimed at strengthening India’s maritime sector through local capability, MSME participation, and skilled employment generation.
