Freedom Must Be Safeguarded Through Science and Self-Reliance: NSTL Director
Dr. Abraham Varughese, Outstanding Scientist and Director of the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), said that freedom must be continuously strengthened and safeguarded, adding that national security depends on scientific capability, technological self-reliance, and strategic foresight, in addition to military strength.
He was addressing scientists, officers, staff, and their families after hoisting the National Flag at NSTL on the eve of the 77th Republic Day.
Dr. Varughese said the global geopolitical situation remains complex and volatile, with conflicts in several regions. Modern warfare now spans conventional weapons, maritime domains, communication routes, engineering supply chains, cyberspace, and autonomous systems.
He said DRDO and its laboratories are aligned with these priorities. NSTL has made progress in defence research, particularly in naval and maritime technologies, and is developing advanced mission-critical systems indigenously, enhancing operational capability and reducing import dependence.
Dr. Varughese also inaugurated a multipurpose fire tender with a capacity of 5,000 litres of water and 500 litres of foam, along with CO₂ and dry chemical powder cylinders.
Students of Ramanath Secondary School presented patriotic songs. Senior scientists, officers, staff, members of the NSTL Civil Employees Union, and the Works Committee participated.
