Visakhapatnam stakes claim for IPL venue slot
Visakhapatnam has renewed its push to host matches in the forthcoming Indian Premier League, with the Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium at the centre of the proposal.
The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), which manages the venue, has stepped up its engagement with league authorities. Officials cited recent infrastructure upgrades and the ground’s track record in hosting high-profile fixtures.
ACA representatives said the stadium now aligns with current broadcast, safety, and spectator comfort requirements. The works include refurbished corporate hospitality areas, upgraded seating, improved public amenities, and modernised floodlighting systems. Fire and safety compliance measures have also been strengthened.
“We prioritised long-term operational readiness. The venue now meets IPL benchmarks,” an ACA official said.
Visakhapatnam has staged IPL fixtures in previous seasons, when franchises used the ACA–VDCA Stadium as a secondary home venue. Those matches drew strong crowds and proceeded without major logistical issues, organisers said.
A former IPL operations executive underlined the value of expanding venue options. “Established centres often deal with scheduling congestion and pitch management challenges. Dependable venues like Visakhapatnam offer flexibility,” he said.
Cricket observers also pointed to the pitch conditions. A domestic coach familiar with the ground said the surface typically produces balanced T20 contests. “It supports both batters and bowlers, which helps deliver competitive matches,” he noted.
Sports industry analysts highlighted the city’s connectivity, favourable coastal weather during the IPL window, and a growing cricket audience as factors strengthening its case.
“Expanding into emerging centres serves both sporting and commercial interests,” a sports business analyst said.
The ACA has formally reiterated its interest in hosting IPL matches, emphasising the stadium’s preparedness and the potential economic benefits for the region.
The IPL governing body is expected to finalise venue allocations closer to the season. Administrators believe Visakhapatnam’s upgraded facilities and prior hosting experience keep it firmly in contention.
