Green Climate Team Rallies to Keep Birds and Animals Hydrated

With temperatures rising and summer in full swing, the need to provide water for wildlife has become urgent. Addressing this concern, JV Ratnam, founder secretary of the Green Climate Team NGO, called on citizens to make water accessible for birds and animals. He was speaking during an awareness drive at Alwar Das Degree College on Wednesday, where clay pots filled with water were placed across the campus.

The programme was organised under the guidance of College Principal Jagadish and witnessed enthusiastic participation from college lecturers, students, and volunteers.

Ratnam said the NGO is working to install 20,000 clay pots across the city to help birds and animals cope with the summer heat. “Even a small gesture, like filling a clay pot with water, can make a big difference for our feathered and four-legged friends,” he said. He also appealed to both the State and Central governments to support initiatives that ensure water facilities for wildlife.

In addition to water, Ratnam stressed the importance of food for animals. He suggested scattering small grains in forests, hills, and coastal areas during the rainy season to ensure birds and animals have adequate nutrition. He also urged authorities to take stricter measures against poaching and hunting, which threaten animals that leave forests in search of water.

The initiative drew support from environmental activists, including Mango Man Appaji and Swanthan Seva Sanstha representative Pragyan Kumar, along with Green Climate Team volunteer J Rajeshwari. College students and faculty actively joined the programme, demonstrating a strong community effort to safeguard wildlife during the scorching summer months.

Ratnam concluded by encouraging everyone to make simple efforts, such as placing water-filled clay pots in open spaces, gardens, and outside their homes, to help sustain birds and animals throughout the season.
