‘Jyotirgamaya’ offers jobs, dignity to transgender persons in Vizag

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the city, the Visakhapatnam City Police have launched the “Jyotirgamaya” program to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for transgender persons and address the social challenges they face.

The program was conceived by Police Commissioner Sri Shankabrata Bagchi,  following complaints that some members of the transgender community, struggling with unemployment, were resorting to begging at traffic signals and shops, occasionally leading to conflicts with the public.

Speaking about the initiative, Commissioner Bagchi said, “We aim to ensure dignity, respect, and social recognition for transgender persons. Employment is not just a source of income; it is a path to equality and inclusion.”

Under the program, Police Control Room Inspector B. Bhaskar Rao has been coordinating with transgender persons and their community leaders, holding multiple meetings to understand their challenges, including social stigma, discrimination, and lack of recognition. Based on these discussions, the authorities identified ways to provide employment opportunities and support self-employment through bank loans.

So far, 20 transgender persons have been employed in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), and six others have received loans to start small businesses such as pan shops and grocery stores. Efforts are underway to extend employment to another 20 community members.

In a significant development, on April 2, 2026, a tea and tiffin center run entirely by transgender persons was inaugurated at the Women Police Station premises, creating jobs for 10 individuals. One of the beneficiaries, Lakshmi, said, “This is the first time I feel truly respected and independent. I can earn with dignity and contribute to my family.”

Social activists have welcomed the program, calling it a “step toward real social inclusion.” Officials said the initiative aims not only to provide financial independence but also to build social recognition and reduce discrimination, helping transgender persons lead empowered lives in Visakhapatnam.
