Coast Guard intensifies coastal security in Andhra Pradesh

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has intensified its efforts to strengthen coastal security and ensure the safety of fishermen in Andhra Pradesh, conducting nearly 1,000 Community Interaction Programmes (CIPs) across the State during 2025-26 as part of its 50th-year celebrations.

The programmes, held along the State’s 1,050-km coastline, reached more than 25,000 fishermen and focused on strengthening coordination between coastal communities and maritime security agencies. The initiative also sought to improve coastal surveillance and emergency response mechanisms.

The programmes were conducted in coordination with the Andhra Pradesh Fisheries Department, Marine Police and district administrations, focusing on maritime safety, search and rescue procedures, safe navigation and sustainable fishing practices.

The Coast Guard sensitised fishermen to the importance of wearing life jackets and carrying communication equipment and emergency distress devices while venturing into the sea. Officials also highlighted the ICG’s toll-free emergency number, 1554, which fishermen can use to seek immediate assistance in distress situations.

The annual fishing ban was another key focus of the outreach programmes. Fishermen were briefed on its ecological and economic significance, particularly its role in protecting breeding grounds, conserving fish stocks and safeguarding their future livelihoods.

“The enthusiastic participation of the fishing community has been instrumental in enhancing information sharing and strengthening our coastal surveillance efforts,” a senior ICG official said.

The programmes also included demonstrations on first aid, cyclone preparedness and safe navigation, helping coastal communities improve their preparedness for emergencies at sea.

The Coast Guard plans to expand its community outreach across all coastal districts, with greater emphasis on digital weather awareness and youth engagement in fishing villages.

The initiative seeks to make fishermen informed and active partners in safeguarding lives at sea and strengthening the security of the country’s maritime frontiers, in keeping with the ICG motto, Vayam Rakshamah (We Protect).
