47,000 crocheted flags help Mahila Manovikas enter Guinness record

Patriotism and crochet came together in a record-breaking display as members of Mahila Manovikas created a 12.18-km-long continuous bunting of more than 47,000 hand-crocheted Indian national flags, earning a place in Guinness World Records.

The feat was celebrated at a programme in the city on Saturday, where dignitaries felicitated the Mahila Manovikas team for bringing international recognition to the region.

Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, former MP and president of the Viswa Hindi Parishad, congratulated the members and praised the initiative for combining patriotism with traditional craftsmanship.

“The achievement is significant not merely for entering the record books, but for fusing patriotism, creativity and a traditional handicraft,” he said.

He said such initiatives could encourage younger generations to appreciate handmade arts and understand the patience, discipline and creativity involved in traditional crafts.

Mr Lakshmi Prasad also highlighted the role of women in preserving and passing on India’s traditional arts, cultural practices and heritage to future generations.

He stressed the need for conscious efforts to keep traditional arts alive as technology and changing lifestyles rapidly reshape everyday life.

Madhavi Suribhatla, president and founder of Mahila Manovikas, attributed the achievement to the organisation’s members’ dedication and enthusiastic participation.

She said the project was conceived as a celebration of the national flag, traditional craftsmanship and the collective strength of women.

The massive crocheted bunting, put together by the members, turned a traditional craft into a record-setting tribute to the national flag.
