Accenture proposes new Visakhapatnam campus, aims to create 12,000 jobs
Global IT consultancy Accenture has proposed a new campus in Visakhapatnam. According to sources, it could generate around 12,000 jobs. The city would become a key hub for the company in India, where it already employs over 300,000 people out of a global workforce of 790,000.
The proposal follows similar expansions by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Cognizant. Both companies leveraged a state policy that offers leased land at Rs 0.99 per acre to firms that commit to creating jobs. Accenture has reportedly requested about 10 acres under the scheme. The proposal is currently under government review.
A state official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the government is keen to bring in Accenture. “It is not an unreasonable ask by Accenture, and the proposal will go through,” the official added. However, approvals may take some time.
Experts said the move reflects a broader trend of IT firms expanding into smaller Indian cities. “Tier-2 cities like Visakhapatnam offer lower land, rent, and wage costs,” said Ramesh Babu, an IT analyst. “Post-pandemic, companies find it easier to hire locally, reversing the trend of talent moving only to major hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.”
The sector still faces global challenges. U.S. policy changes, including a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visas and a proposed 25% tax on American outsourcing, could limit access to skilled foreign talent.
An industry veteran, requesting anonymity, said, “While global policies add uncertainty, domestic expansion plans like Accenture’s show confidence in India’s talent pool. Companies are increasingly looking at Tier-2 cities for long-term growth. This is a positive sign for regional employment and development.”
If approved, the Visakhapatnam campus would strengthen the city’s position as an emerging IT hub. It would also create opportunities beyond India’s traditional technology centres.
