AI Can Support Research, But Human Judgment Remains Essential: GIMSR Pro VC
GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane said artificial intelligence is gaining importance in medical research. She urged young researchers to strengthen core skills like critical thinking, analytical judgment, and ethical awareness.
She spoke at a one-day workshop titled “Empowering Postgraduates with Smart Research Skills” at GITAM Deemed University. The event aimed to help postgraduate medical students understand how AI can support academic research.
Dr. Batmanabane said AI can speed up literature reviews, data analysis, and research documentation. She warned that technology should support, not replace, human reasoning. “AI can assist, but the researcher must evaluate evidence and think independently,” she said.
The workshop featured sessions by Dr. Raveendran, Dr. Jatinder Singh, and Dr. Harsimrat Singh Waraich. They showed how AI tools can help in forming research ideas and designing studies. They also discussed ethical concerns and the need to maintain academic integrity when using AI.
Students practiced using MYCALPharm, an AI-based research support platform. The tool helps with data organisation, reference management, and scientific writing.
The Department of Pharmacology coordinated the programme under the guidance of Dr. Tulasi Madhuri Thotakura. Faculty members Dr. A. Syam Kumar, Dr. N. Sindhura, Dr. K.P. Poojitha, Dr. Krishna Sai Attili, and Dr. G. Vineela supported the event. Organizers said similar workshops will continue to help young medical researchers build essential skills.
