Ambedkar’s ideals continue to guide India, says Prabhakar
Noted economist and political commentator Parakala Prabhakar emphasized that the Constitution drafted by B.R. Ambedkar remains a unifying force for India. He made these remarks during a special programme organized by the Andhra University Ambedkar Chair.
Mr. Prabhakar highlighted Ambedkar’s exceptional dedication during the Constitution’s drafting process, noting that he created a framework that united a diverse nation of many languages, cultures, and faiths. According to him, the Constitution assures citizens that the State will safeguard their security, dignity, and access to justice.
He pointed out that the Constitution reflects India’s unique diversity. Unlike several nations founded on caste, religion, or region, India chose a different path under leaders who rejected building the nation on religious identity.
Explaining the Constitution’s structure, Mr. Prabhakar said it guarantees rights and equal opportunities to all sections of society. He urged young people to recognize the challenges facing the country and to take responsibility for protecting the constitutional framework.
Speaking about Ambedkar’s humility, Mr. Prabhakar recalled that Ambedkar never sought full credit for drafting the Constitution. He referenced Telugu leader N.G. Ranga’s proposal to appoint Ambedkar as Chairman of the Drafting Committee, a decision later supported by Mahatma Gandhi.
He also noted that the Constitution clearly defines the judiciary’s functioning and continues to guide India’s growth. Describing it as a document “written by Indians, for Indians,” he underscored how the ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity have firmly taken root over the decades.
The event was presided over by Ambedkar Chair Professor M. James Stephen, who also felicitated Mr. Prabhakar.
