Andhra Pradesh leads India in energy-efficient buildings
Andhra Pradesh has approved 786 buildings under the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), the highest in India. This surpasses other major states: Telangana (738), Punjab (552), Uttar Pradesh (201), Haryana (100), Kerala (57), and Uttarakhand (12). Across these states, 2,446 buildings now meet ECBC standards.
Urban Development Minister P. Narayana credited Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for the achievement. He said the Chief Minister has prioritized energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water management to improve citizen services.
Recalling past initiatives, Mr. Narayana highlighted the 2014 LED streetlight project in Visakhapatnam. Supported by the central government and EESL, it expanded nationwide, won international recognition, and helped the city host the BRICS Summit.
Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar said Andhra Pradesh is creating a future-ready roadmap by adopting global best practices and modern technologies in urban infrastructure and transport.
Commissioner Sampat Kumar added that focusing on energy efficiency has lowered public service costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Officials from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL) recently met state representatives to discuss expanding ECBC compliance. BEE Director General Srivastav urged all states to adopt ECBC, calling energy-efficient buildings essential for Smart Cities
