Andhra Pradesh reaches 200 organ donations in record time
Andhra Pradesh has reached a significant milestone by recording 200 organ donations as of September 7. This is the earliest the state has ever achieved this figure within a calendar year. The previous record was set in 2024, with 210 donations. With four months remaining, health officials are optimistic that the state will exceed 250 donations and may even approach 300 by the end of the year.
The surge in donations has been attributed to three key initiatives: the rotation of transplant coordinators between hospitals, the introduction of Government Order (GO) No. 95, which offers recognition and support to donor families, and ongoing awareness campaigns across the state. These efforts have contributed to a growing culture of organ donation in Andhra Pradesh.
According to Dr. K Rambabu, state coordinator of the Jeevan Dan programme, the focus has been on fostering trust and offering recognition. “GO No. 95 ensures financial support, public honours from district officials, and logistical assistance for donor families. This helps restore dignity to the act of organ donation,” Dr. Rambabu said, highlighting the importance of these measures.
Another significant change has been the rotation of transplant coordinators, aimed at spreading successful practices from high-performing hospitals. These coordinators play a vital role in supporting families during emotional times and facilitating communication with medical teams. Dr. Rambabu added, “Their work often turns grief into life-saving opportunities.”
To further promote organ donation, officials plan to enhance public awareness through celebrity endorsements, campaigns in government hospitals, and increased social media outreach. The goal is to reduce the stigma around organ donation and normalize it as a life-saving choice. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav commended the Jeevan Dan team and donor families, praising their courage. “Despite deep grief, these families have brought light into another family’s life,” he said.
