Andhra University VC Calls for Greater Social Inclusion of Fishing Communities
Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.P. Raja Sekhar on Wednesday underscored the need for greater social inclusion of fishing communities, observing that they continue to face marginalisation along the State’s coastline.
Speaking at a lecture on “Stories of Resilience: Social Inclusion of Fishing Communities for Viksit Bharat 2047” organised by the Centre for Study of Social Inclusion (CSSI), Prof. Raja Sekhar urged the Centre to carry out field studies, launch extension programmes and create awareness campaigns to ensure that disadvantaged groups are able to access welfare schemes meant for them.
Highlighting the hardships of fishermen, Prof. A. Narasimha Rao, Principal of the College of Arts and Commerce, spoke of the long and risky voyages undertaken in traditional boats, often without basic facilities such as toilets during extended stays at sea. He also drew attention to the additional responsibilities of women, who are engaged in drying and selling fish to support their families.
CSSI Director Dr. P. Subba Rao observed that fishing continues to be one of the most dangerous occupations, prompting many young people to seek alternative livelihoods. He announced that the Centre would soon roll out skill-building and capacity development programmes for tribal and marginalised youth.
Guest speaker Dr. Bala Nikku, Associate Professor at Thompson Rivers University, Canada, said that while fishing communities in Andhra Pradesh have shown remarkable resilience, many remain excluded from government benefits. He noted the financial strain caused by the two-month annual fishing ban, pointing out that the existing relief of Rs 20,000 per month was inadequate. He called for enhanced financial assistance and wider coverage of schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
A.P. State Executive Director of FISHCON Arjilli Dasu added that nearly 150 fishermen had lost their lives last year in the north coastal region, most during take-offs and landings, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety measures.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. N. Babavali of CSSI and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. B. Siva Rama Krishna. Nearly 75 faculty members, students and scholars attended the event.
