AP clears smart streetlighting overhaul across cities

The Andhra Pradesh government has cleared a State-wide rollout of an “Enhanced Energy Efficient Smart Street Lighting System” across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), in a major push to cut power costs and modernise urban infrastructure.

The project will replace conventional streetlights with intelligent LED systems integrated with Internet of Things (IoT)-based Lighting Management Systems (ILMS), enabling real-time monitoring, centralised control, and automated fault detection.

Officials said the smart network will significantly reduce energy consumption while improving the reliability of public lighting through predictive maintenance and faster response to outages.

The government will partner with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to implement the project under a performance-based model. The cost has been fixed at ₹175 per light per month, inclusive of GST.

The Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation Limited has been designated as the Project Monitoring Unit and will oversee technical execution, including the preparation of project reports, tendering, implementation tracking, and assessment of greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Urban Development) S. Suresh Kumar said the initiative marks a major shift in urban service delivery. With streetlighting accounting for a significant share of municipal power consumption, the smart system is expected to deliver substantial savings while enhancing efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability across cities.
