AU Student Death Triggers Protests Over Medical Negligence

Tensions escalated at Andhra University on Friday after the death of B.Ed student V. Venkata Sai Manikanta on Thursday, triggering protests across the campus. Students alleged that inadequate medical facilities and delayed emergency care contributed to the tragedy.

Manikanta, a native of Vizianagaram residing at Satavahana Hostel, collapsed in the hostel washroom Thursday morning. He was rushed to the university dispensary, which referred him to King George Hospital (KGH). Fellow students claimed the university ambulance lacked oxygen, despite Manikanta reportedly struggling to breathe during the journey. Doctors at KGH declared him dead on arrival.

“If the dispensary had basic facilities or the ambulance had oxygen, Manikanta might have survived,” said Ramesh, a fellow student. Priya, another student, added, “We are worried that such incidents can happen again. The dispensary operates only till 5 p.m., and there is just one doctor on duty.”

Protests began Thursday evening and intensified on Friday, with student unions and the YSR Congress Party’s student wing calling for a bandh and sit-in at the Administrative Block. Hundreds of students gathered at the AU main gate and Administrative Block, demanding action against Vice Chancellor G.C. Raja Sekhar, while some demanded his resignation.

A minor scuffle reportedly broke out when students attempted to enter the Vice Chancellor’s chamber, prompting police intervention. Several students, particularly girls, alleged they were manhandled.

“Our demands are clear: suspend those responsible for Manikanta’s death, upgrade the university dispensary, and ensure medical staff are available round-the-clock,” said Sita, a protester.

Speaking in the Assembly, IT Minister Nara Lokesh said that Manikanta had reportedly suffered from fits, and university authorities had attempted to assist, but were unsuccessful. He also expressed concern over the politicisation of the incident by student unions disrupting classes. An inquiry committee has been set up to investigate the matter.
