AU VC Urges Focus on Mental Health During Emergencies
Andhra University (AU) Vice-Chancellor G.P. Raja Sekhar emphasised the importance of prioritising mental health in daily life. He made the remarks while inaugurating a one-day symposium organised by the Department of Psychology on “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies” to mark World Mental Health Day on Friday.
He told the audience that millions of people worldwide suffer from mental health issues triggered by life events. He urged individuals to use modern treatment options to manage these challenges effectively.
M.V.R. Raju, Principal of AU College of Science, highlighted the growing global incidence of mental health problems. He said depression-related suicides and cancer caused the highest number of fatalities. He added that wars were harming people’s mental wellbeing. The COVID-19 pandemic, he noted, had further worsened the situation. Raju also pointed out that the decline of social connections contributed to deteriorating mental health.
Renowned psychiatrist Radhakanth stressed that counselling for people affected by natural disasters is as crucial as providing relief and rehabilitation. He cited the calm and composed approach of Defence and fire service personnel during disaster operations. He urged the public to adopt similar resilience in daily life.
The event also included talks by K.V. Rami Reddy, superintendent of the Government Hospital for Mental Care; T. Arjun, chief medical officer at Kalam Institute of Health Technology; and Asleena, founder of ‘Beyond Autism.’
The symposium aimed to raise awareness about mental health, especially in emergencies. It stressed the need for accessible services to support those in need.
