Awareness Walk and CPR Demo Held in Visakhapatnam

The city witnessed an awareness walk and live CPR demonstration on Thursday to mark World Anaesthesia Day and CPR Awareness Week (October 13–17). The event was jointly organised by the Indian Society of Anaesthesia (ISA), Visakhapatnam city branch, the Department of Anaesthesia at Andhra Medical College (AMC), and the Department of Emergency Medicine, King George Hospital (KGH).

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naveen SNR of KGH highlighted the significance of the day. “October 16, 1846, marks the day when Dr. William TG Morton successfully demonstrated ether anaesthesia, a breakthrough that changed the face of surgery. The day also recognises the critical role anaesthesiologists play in ensuring patient safety,” he said.

A live demonstration of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) emphasised the importance of timely intervention during emergencies. “Even basic training in chest compressions and patient handling can save lives. Our aim is to equip citizens to act confidently before medical help arrives,” said a senior emergency medicine doctor.

Chief Guest Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi lauded the work of anaesthesiologists and emergency doctors. “These professionals save countless lives every day. Citizens should not wait for awareness weeks alone. Year-round CPR training is crucial,” he said.

Dr. I Vani, Superintendent of KGH, and Dr. KVSM Sandhya Devi, Principal of AMC, also attended, stressing the importance of public participation in emergency care. Families and health enthusiasts joined the walk and demonstration, underlining that trained citizens and timely intervention can make a life-saving difference.
