City police bust fake currency racket, arrest 60-year-old man

Visakhapatnam city police arrested a 60-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly trying to print fake currency at MVP Colony late on Wednesday night. The arrest followed a tip-off about suspicious activity in MVP Sector 11.

The accused has been identified as Sri Ram, also known as Gupta, from Barwani district in Madhya Pradesh. Police recovered a glass paper-cutting table, a printer, a laptop, mobile phones, and fake Rs 500 and Rs 200 notes. The notes were printed on one side only and had no serial numbers.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mary Prasanthi said the arrest came after credible intelligence. “Following instructions from Commissioner of Police Shankarbatha Bagchi, MVP police, with support from the City Task Force (CTF), raided the house and uncovered the fake currency operation,” she said.

The DCP added that the accused bought special paper from Mumbai for printing the notes. After getting the printer and other equipment, he started printing when police caught him red-handed.

ACP Annepu Narasimha Murthy and MVP Police Station Inspector KNSV Prasad were present at the briefing. Police said investigations are ongoing to see if the accused has links to a bigger counterfeit network.
