CMFRI open house brings marine science closer to students

The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute in the city celebrated its 79th Foundation Day with an open house and marine species exhibition on Tuesday. The event attracted a large number of students, research scholars, and members of the public.

The program ran from 10 AM to 4 PM at the institute’s facility near RK Beach, behind the Aqua Sports Complex. Approximately 1,000 students from 15 schools and colleges in Visakhapatnam attended, along with nearly 100 postgraduate and PhD students.

A live display of marine organisms was the main highlight of the event. Students observed jellyfish in specially designed tanks, as well as various species of crabs, shrimp, seaweeds, and fish. This exhibition allowed them to understand marine biodiversity through direct observation rather than solely from textbooks.

Younger children enjoyed taking photos of marine species, while college students posed for selfies near large models of octopuses and lobsters placed outside the campus. The interactive setup made learning more engaging and practical.

Visitors toured the marine museum and learned about the history of marine life. They also viewed SCUBA and surfing equipment, kayaks, and large models of sharks, dolphins, lobsters, and octopuses. Twelve marine researchers engaged with students and explained their ongoing research. Participants visited advanced laboratories, where they observed microscopic marine organisms and gained insights into sustainable fishing, marine conservation, and aquaculture technology.

Centre head Joe Kizhakudan stated that the Visakhapatnam regional centre plays a crucial role in marine fisheries research, environmental monitoring, ocean conservation, and supporting coastal communities in Andhra Pradesh.
