CoE at Vizag mental hospital to launch new courses
The Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the Government Mental Hospital in Pedavaltheru will introduce new academic programmes from the coming academic year. Officials said they have begun steps to fully operationalise the newly inaugurated CoE building inside the hospital campus.
The Central Government supported the upgradation to strengthen specialised mental healthcare and train professionals in the field.
The Government Nursing College at the King George Hospital (KGH) campus currently runs a Psychiatry Nursing course. However, enrolments have fallen sharply. Ten students joined in 2024–25, but only one enrolled for 2025–26. Officials said limited infrastructure and the absence of a dedicated institute have reduced student interest.
To address this, the mental healthcare hospital authorities have asked Andhra Medical College to allow the course to shift to the CoE premises. If the college approves the request, classes will begin in the first week of February. Officials said four faculty members are available for the programme.
The CoE also plans to start Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work courses, with 30 seats each. Officials have submitted a proposal to the Director of Medical Education seeking permission. After receiving clearance, they will approach the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) for recognition. The RCI is expected to inspect the infrastructure and facilities before approving.
Hospital Superintendent Dr. Ramireddy said the hospital is arranging hostel facilities, a library, and faculty chambers for students.
