Collector launches National Road Safety Month in Vizag
District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad on Thursday launched National Road Safety Month by releasing pamphlets and posters at a programme held at the Collectorate.
Addressing officials, the Collector said the district must work towards becoming accident-free. He stressed the need to spread road safety awareness among motorists and pedestrians in a sustained manner.
He asked engineering officials to ensure proper road markings and adequate signboards on all major roads. The Collector said technology should be used to provide safety training, with special focus on two-wheeler riders, pedestrians, and schoolchildren.
In a separate programme, Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi instructed traffic police and Transport Department officials to organise awareness programmes throughout the month. He said the driving licences of motorists violating traffic rules should be suspended for three months. He added that drunken driving cases would be dealt with strictly.
Meanwhile, District Public Transportation Officer B. Appala Naidu held a review meeting with APSRTC officials to finalise activities for the month-long campaign. He asked Depot Managers to adopt technology-driven training methods to improve safe driving practices.
Mr. Naidu also called for periodic medical check-ups for drivers and suggested awards for those with accident-free service records. Deputy Chief Traffic Manager K. Padmavathi, Deputy Mechanical Engineer A. Gangadhara Rao, Depot Managers, and other officials attended the meeting.
