Collector warns of strict action over maternal deaths

District Collector M. N. Harendira Prasad has cautioned health authorities that any maternal death reported in the district will invite stern action. He said it is the clear responsibility of the Medical and Health Department officials to ensure that no woman loses her life during childbirth and added that negligence will not be tolerated.

The Collector held a review meeting on maternal death surveillance with officials from the District Medical and Health Department and other departments at the Collectorate on Friday. He noted that two maternal deaths were reported in September 2025, one under Kanithi Primary Health Centre and another under Nakkavanipalem Urban Health Centre.

Calling the incidents unacceptable, Mr. Prasad instructed officials to ensure that high-risk pregnant women receive immediate and uninterrupted medical care. He said timely intervention is essential to prevent avoidable deaths.

District Medical and Health Officer Dr. P. Jagadeeswara Rao said early identification of high-risk cases is crucial. He stressed the need for timely vaccinations, proper counselling, nutritional support and birth planning, along with other essential services.
