Community Participation Key in Emergency Preparedness: District Collector
District Collector Harendhira Prasad highlighted the crucial role of community engagement in emergency preparedness at the inauguration of CPR Awareness Week on Monday. Speaking at R. K. Beach, he urged citizens to actively participate in awareness campaigns and attend regular CPR training sessions.
Organized by the Indian Red Cross Society, Visakhapatnam Branch, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the initiative will run from October 13 to 17, 2025. Mr. Prasad stressed that timely intervention during emergencies such as cardiac arrests or accidents can save lives, and a well-trained public acts as a vital first line of response until professional help arrives.
Commissioner of Police, Dr. Shankabrata Bagchi, emphasized CPR as a lifesaving technique that keeps blood flowing to the brain and vital organs when the heart stops. He highlighted that immediate CPR can significantly improve survival rates and advocated for Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in all ambulances. He noted that public awareness, effective CPR training, and accessible AEDs together strengthen emergency response systems.
Bala Satish, Chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society in Visakhapatnam, underscored the need to equip citizens with lifesaving skills. The event included practical CPR demonstrations by trainer Rahmatullah and first aid sessions by Dr. P. Ramarao.
The ceremony saw participation from Murali Krishna Patnaik, Vice Chairman, along with committee members, staff, volunteers, and local residents. Mr. Patnaik announced that the Red Cross will conduct five days of training sessions, aiming to enhance safety and emergency readiness across the city.
