D9 Locomotives Boost Freight on Kothavalasa–Kirandul Line
The Centre will allocate 300 high-powered D9 electric locomotives to the Kothavalasa–Kirandul (KK) railway line. This move aims to boost freight movement on one of the country’s key mineral corridors.
Railway sources said 15 locomotives have already departed from the Dahod manufacturing plant in Gujarat. The engines, part of the 55001 series, are beginning a phased rollout to enhance freight operations.
The KK line carries iron ore from the Bailadila mines in Kirandul to Visakhapatnam. From there, ships transport it to international markets. The route generates major revenue for Indian Railways.
Currently, freight trains run with G5 electric locomotives, introduced in 1980. These fifth-generation, box-type engines withstand harsh weather and produce 3,850 horsepower using DC traction motors. Officials said their efficiency and capacity no longer meet modern demands.
The D9 locomotives produce over 6,000 horsepower with three-phase AC traction systems. They feature regenerative braking for better energy efficiency and operational control. These engines can haul longer, heavier trains, making them ideal for iron ore and coal transport.
A senior Railway official said the new locomotives will improve both train speed and load capacity. This is crucial given the expected rise in mineral traffic from the region.
Railway authorities plan further upgrades along the KK line. They will strengthen tracks, enhance signalling, and expand yard capacity to handle longer rakes.
The Dahod facility manufactures the locomotives under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with German technology support. Officials said this step reflects Indian Railways’ focus on modernisation, efficiency, and indigenous production.
