Delay in commercial LPG supply worries traders

Delay in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders in the district has raised concern among traders, particularly hotels, messes and tiffin centres that depend on them for daily operations.

Gas dealers said several oil companies have not delivered the commercial cylinders booked earlier and are supplying only domestic LPG cylinders. The reasons for withholding commercial supplies have not been disclosed. “Commercial cylinders that we booked have not been delivered so far. We are not sure whether the supply will resume by Wednesday,” a dealer said.

Commercial cylinders, weighing 19 kg each, are widely used by food outlets. Following the recent revision, the price of a cylinder stands at ₹1,938.50. As many dealers did not receive stocks on Tuesday, they were unable to supply cylinders to customers.

The disruption comes amid reports that LPG imports have been affected due to the ongoing war. The Centre has reportedly directed that LPG be prioritised for domestic consumption while cautioning companies against creating artificial shortages.

Meanwhile, demand for domestic LPG cylinders has increased in the informal market. Street vendors and small eateries are reportedly obtaining domestic cylinders by paying extra charges to delivery personnel. “Delivery workers are charging around Rs 1,300 per domestic cylinder,” a roadside vendor said.

Traders warned that if the disruption continues, small hotels and messes may face difficulties and food prices could rise. They urged Civil Supplies Department officials to ensure adequate supply and prevent artificial shortages.
