DRDO expands with new labs and awareness centres

Samir V. Kamat, chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, said that the organisation is strengthening its scientific base with five newly established laboratories and 15 new centres dedicated to underwater and space domain awareness.

Speaking after being conferred an honorary doctorate at a special convocation of SRM University-AP on Saturday, Dr. Kamat highlighted the growing importance of intellectual capital in national security. He said the new facilities would accelerate research in critical technologies, particularly in areas linked to maritime surveillance and space situational awareness, which are increasingly vital for modern defence preparedness.

Encouraging students and young researchers, he called for greater participation from academia in advancing indigenous defence technologies. He stressed that innovation, long-term strategic thinking, and cutting-edge scientific development would play a decisive role in positioning India among global leaders in defence research.

Delivering the convocation address, Arjun Ram Meghwal pointed to India’s transformation in industrial strength and development. He urged graduating students to remain resilient and focused, advising them to build on their strengths, address weaknesses, recognise opportunities, and convert them into success.

The event was attended by the university’s leadership, including founder chancellor T R Paarivendhar, pro-chancellor P Sathyanarayanan, vice-chancellor Ch Satish Kumar, registrar R Premkumar, along with members of the governing body, Board of Management, and Academic and Research Council.

The convocation brought together students, faculty, and dignitaries, marking both an academic milestone for graduates and a broader reflection on the role of science, research, and innovation in national development.
