Drivers, Authorities at Odds Over City Speed Limit

The city police’s decision to enforce a 40 km/h speed limit on vehicles has sparked debate among residents and motorists. Many question its safety and practicality. CP Shankhbrat Bagchi warned, “Vehicles exceeding the 40 km/h limit will attract fines and could face suspension of driving licenses.”

The regulation covers all municipal roads, the national highway from Aganampudi to Kommadi, and Beach Road from Coastal Battery to Bheemunipatnam. Authorities will install laser guns at multiple points to monitor speeds. Vehicles exceeding the limit will face a fine of ₹1,000.

Motorists argue that constantly checking the speedometer can reduce attention to the road and increase accident risks. They also note that heavy traffic often requires quick acceleration at signals. “Limiting speeds to 40 km/h could worsen congestion or cause rear-end collisions,” one driver said.

The announcement comes before Bhogapuram International Airport opens in June. Commuters worry the limit will affect travel times. “Reaching the airport already takes over an hour. During peak hours, it can take an extra 30 minutes. Fining vehicles for going above 40 km/h in such conditions is unreasonable,” said a frequent traveler. Some suggest raising the limit to 60 km/h on stretches such as Dairy Farm to Kommadi and NAD Junction to Aganampudi.

G. Vamanamurthy, General Secretary of the AP Auto Workers’ Association, said, “A blanket 40 km/h limit is impractical for city roads. The speed limit should be raised to 60 km/h.” Former corporator B. Gangarao added, “This regulation appears aimed more at collecting fines than preventing accidents. Authorities should focus on accident-prone zones instead.”

The police defended the limit, saying it is necessary to improve road safety. “We will strictly monitor speeds in the coming weeks,” a police official said.
