Early detection key to reducing cancer severity, say health officials

Early detection can play a critical role in reducing the severity of cancer, District Medical and Health Officer Dr. S. Bhaskara Rao said on Thursday. As part of the NCD 4.0 initiative, a training program on cancer screening was held at the NGO Home for Community Health Officers (CHOs) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). The session, led by NCD Program Officer Dr. Jagan Mohan, featured practical demonstrations by gynecologists and dentists on identifying and screening for cancer.

Dr. Bhaskara Rao highlighted the rising incidence of oral, breast, and cervical cancers. “Timely detection at the field level, followed by proper treatment, can prevent the disease from becoming severe,” he said. He urged medical staff to monitor patients carefully during routine check-ups, recognize early warning signs, and apply the training guidelines in their daily work.

He also stressed the importance of community engagement. “Educating people about warning signs and the need for regular screening is as crucial as treatment. Awareness can save lives,” he said. Staff were further encouraged to continue monitoring patients with chronic conditions, particularly hypertension and diabetes, to ensure comprehensive care.

Dr. Jagan Mohan Rao said the Health Department would focus on cancer screening under the NCD 4.0 survey. “District-level training sessions will be conducted in phases to prepare medical officers and staff for effective cancer surveys and screening. Well-prepared field teams are essential for early detection,” he added.

The program was attended by District NCD Program Officer Dr. T. Jagan Mohan Rao, DIO Dr. Vijayamohan, Epidemiologist Dr. Kaushik, trainers including Gynecologist Dr. Poorna Chandrika, Dental Surgeons Dr. Sukrita and Dr. Ramya, DEO Taj, and other officials. Participants pledged to implement the training in the field and raise community awareness on cancer prevention.
