Escaped Prisoners Re-Arrested Within 24 Hours

Two remand prisoners who escaped from the Chodavaram Sub-Jail on Friday evening after attacking a jail official were re-arrested within 24 hours by the Visakhapatnam City Task Force police. The duo was intercepted near Gollalapalem Junction on Saturday evening.

The accused were identified as Nakka Ravi Kumar (30) of Visakhapatnam and Bejawada Ramu (26) of Anakapalli district. Around 4 p.m. on September 5, they attacked Head Warder Vasa Veerraju with an iron hammer, snatched gate keys, stole a mobile phone from ASI Krishna Murthy, locked other staff inside the guard room, and fled the jail premises.

Following the jailbreak, Anakapalli district police issued lookout notices and conducted intensive vehicle checks. The City Task Force tracked down the fugitives and handed them over to Chodavaram police.

During interrogation, the prisoners admitted that they were influenced by fellow inmate Yeka Swami (26), who has a record of violent crimes. Police said Swami instigated the escape, highlighting negligence by jail staff and the prisoners’ inability to arrange sureties despite being granted bail.

A stolen Vivo mobile phone was recovered from Ramu. Swami has been added as a third accused for conspiracy. Both men were booked under Crime No. 192/2025 of Chodavaram Police Station and sent to judicial custody.

Police officials praised the coordinated efforts of the City Task Force and Anakapalli district police in re-arresting the escapees swiftly.
