Former CID DIG Sunil Kumar Naik Arrested

The Andhra Pradesh police have arrested former Crime Investigation Department (CID) Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sunil Kumar Naik in connection with the alleged custodial torture of Raghu Rama Krishna Raju, who is currently serving as Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Naik, a 2005-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Bihar cadre, is currently posted as Inspector General of Police in Bihar’s Fire Services Department. According to police officials, a special team from Andhra Pradesh travelled to Bihar and took him into custody in the early hours of Monday. He is being brought to Andhra Pradesh for further investigation.

Confirming the arrest, Guntur district Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said the operation was conducted following due legal procedures. “He was arrested in Bihar and is being brought to Andhra Pradesh,” the SP said.

The case stems from a complaint lodged by Raghu Rama Krishna Raju, the current Undi MLA. Based on the complaint, Guntur police registered a case on July 11, 2024, invoking serious charges, including Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (attempt to murder), Section 326 IPC (causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons), along with other relevant provisions.

Police sources said Sunil Kumar Naik has been named as Accused No. 7 in the case. Investigators believe his custodial interrogation will be crucial for gathering additional evidence and establishing the sequence of events surrounding the alleged torture.

Earlier, acting on a complaint filed at Nagarampalem police station in Guntur district, cases were also registered against former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and three IPS officers. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the roles of the officials named in the complaint.

Officials said further details are expected as the investigation progresses and Naik is formally questioned.
