GCC Wins SKOCH Award for Tribal Livelihoods
The Girijan Cooperative Corporation Limited (GCC) has been honoured with the SKOCH Awards 2025 in the Tribal Welfare category for its initiative themed “Transforming Tribal Livelihoods Through Fair Markets Entrepreneurship,” recognising its sustained efforts in strengthening tribal economies and promoting inclusive growth.
Vice Chairman and Managing Director of GCC, S. S. Shobika, received the award at a ceremony held in New Delhi on Saturday, attended by policymakers, industry leaders, and representatives from the development sector across the country.
According to an official release, GCC has been playing a pivotal role in improving tribal livelihoods by ensuring fair and direct market access for tribal farmers, thereby eliminating middlemen and enhancing income realisation. The corporation has focused on strengthening processing and marketing systems while also creating sustainable employment opportunities for tribal women and youth in remote and agency areas.
A key initiative of GCC has been the transparent, MSP-aligned procurement of Minor Forest Produce (MFP), which safeguards tribal gatherers from exploitation and provides them with stable and assured income support. This intervention has significantly contributed to improving the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities.
Officials further stated that GCC has been strengthening Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) and Van Dhan Producer Enterprise Societies (VDPES), enabling tribal self-help groups through skill development, infrastructure support, and capacity building. These efforts have encouraged value addition, improved product quality, and promoted entrepreneurship among tribal communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Shobika said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of tribal farmers, the dedication of GCC staff, and the continued support of the government. She described the award as a matter of pride and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to the holistic development of tribal areas, with a continued focus on empowering livelihoods and creating sustainable economic opportunities.
