GITAM Marks National Science Day, Honours Sir C.V. Raman

“National Science Day reminds us of India’s rich scientific heritage. It also highlights the importance of fostering curiosity and innovation among young minds,” said Prof. Eroll D’Souza, Vice-Chancellor of GITAM (Deemed to be University). He was speaking during the celebrations of National Science Day and the 137th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman on Friday. The university organised a series of programmes on campus to honour the physicist’s contributions and to inspire students toward scientific excellence.

The celebrations began with floral tributes at Sir C.V. Raman’s statue. Prof. S. Ananta Ramakrishna, Dean of the School of Science; Prof. Y. Gouthama Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor; and Prof. Rajan Jha from the School of Basic Sciences, IIT Bhubaneswar, were also present to pay homage.

Prof. Ananta Ramakrishna highlighted that Sir C.V. Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect continues to inspire generations of scientists. He noted that it remains a cornerstone of optical science even today.

The programme included interactive sessions and guided laboratory visits. Students from local colleges explored GITAM’s science and engineering labs. They witnessed live experiments and learned about modern research tools and techniques. University professors and researchers engaged with the students, explaining scientific principles in an accessible and inspiring way.

The event saw enthusiastic participation. Many students expressed interest in pursuing careers in science and research. Several participants said that learning about Sir C.V. Raman’s life and achievements motivated them to think creatively and contribute meaningfully to science.

The celebrations served not only as a tribute to one of India’s greatest scientists but also as a platform to ignite young minds with the spirit of discovery.
