GITAM University, BFI Launch MedTech Incubation Centre
GITAM Deemed to be University has partnered with Blockchain For Impact (BFI) to establish a MedTech Incubation Centre at the GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR). The initiative aims to reduce India’s reliance on imported medical devices by fostering homegrown innovation.
India now imports over 70% of critical devices, mainly because of a fragmented ecosystem where clinicians, engineers, and startups work separately. The new center, backed by structured BFI grants, will offer a collaborative space to turn clinical challenges into research, design, and prototypes.
The facility will focus on non-invasive diagnostics and patient monitoring, with early detection expected to lower healthcare costs and improve outcomes. External startups, faculty, residents, and students will have access to clinical data and hospital infrastructure. The project emphasizes intellectual property and locally manufactured products, aligning with Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane, Pro Vice-Chancellor of GIMSR, said, “When clinicians, engineers, and researchers work together, hospital challenges can be solved systematically.” Visakhapatnam MP and GITAM President M. Sribharath added that strengthening domestic MedTech capabilities is crucial for affordability and global relevance.
