Google, AdaniConnex to set up India’s largest data centre in Vizag

Adani Enterprises’ data centre joint venture, AdaniConnex, has joined hands with Google to build India’s largest data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The partnership also includes Airtel, with a planned investment of $15 billion over the next five years.

According to a statement from Adani Enterprises on Tuesday, the Google AI hub will be powered by a new subsea cable network and clean energy infrastructure. The campus will begin with a 1-gigawatt (GW) capacity and will expand to “multiple gigawatts” in the coming years, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said at an AI event in New Delhi.

“This is the largest AI hub we are building outside the United States,” Kurian said, adding that the facility will be part of Google’s global network of 12 AI centres.

The project will include joint investments in new transmission lines, renewable energy projects, and advanced energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh, Adani Enterprises said.

Calling it a “landmark development,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a post on X that the hub would bring “gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure” to India. He said the project would accelerate AI innovation and digital growth across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the initiative, describing it as a powerful step toward democratising technology and achieving the goal of AI for All.

India has become a major destination for global cloud and data investments. Tech giants Microsoft and Amazon have committed billions to build similar facilities, while industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani are also expanding their data infrastructure footprint.

The Vizag project cements India’s position as a key hub in global AI and cloud computing.
