Google to Build Asia’s Largest Data Center in Visakhapatnam
The Andhra Pradesh government will hand over 200 acres of land in Anandapuram mandal, Bheemili constituency, to Google by November 2025 for the construction of Asia’s largest data center. The $6 billion project follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in December 2024 to build a 1-gigawatt hyperscale facility in Tarluvada. Officials say the project will be a major step in strengthening India’s digital infrastructure.
To encourage global investors, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who assured that tax policies for technology companies would remain stable. After site inspections by Google’s Network Vice President, Tarluvada village in Anandapuram mandal was chosen for the project. With land titles settled and compensation paid, work is expected to start soon.
The data center will be connected through submarine cables from Singapore to Visakhapatnam. A new submarine cable landing station (CLS) will be built in the city, similar to those in Chennai, Mumbai, Cochin, and Trivandrum. The station will also support the upcoming Adani data center, helping Visakhapatnam become a digital hub in India.
Industry leaders say the project will change Andhra Pradesh’s IT sector. Lakshmi Mukkavilli, President of ITAAP, said Google’s entry would put Visakhapatnam on the global IT map and create thousands of jobs. Ramesh, CEO of a local startup, said the project would bring more investment and help the city’s growing startup ecosystem.
Bheemili MLA Ganta Srinivas Rao compared the project to Microsoft’s entry into Hyderabad’s Hi-Tech City, which transformed Telangana’s IT industry. He said the Google data center in Visakhapatnam will turn the city into a world-class IT hub and drive economic growth. With strong government support and international investment, Visakhapatnam is set to emerge as one of Asia’s leading technology centers.
