GVMC Cancels ‘Rasa’ Tender Over GTS Mismanagement
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has cancelled the tenders of ‘Rasa’ company for the Town-Kottharoad and Chemalapalli Garbage Transfer Stations (GTS) after months of inaction and public complaints.
A surprise inspection by GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg revealed that the hook-loader vehicles provided for waste transport were missing or idle. Staff claimed some vehicles were at police stations due to accidents, while others had been stored in garages for months. Diesel, however, continued to be drawn as if the vehicles were operational.
‘Rasa’ had earlier managed Gajuwaka, Town-Kottharoad, and Chemalapalli GTS. Instead of using hook-loaders, the company transported waste in open tippers, causing accumulation at stations and sanitation issues. Officials have been directed to recover costs for past diesel misuse and machinery repairs from the company.
GTS units are designed to move city waste efficiently and safely to the Kapuluppada dumping yard using Closed Compact System (CCS) machinery. Contractors manage operations through tenders and receive up to ₹1.8 crore annually for diesel and maintenance.
Despite winning the 2026 tenders, ‘Rasa’ failed to start work, forcing officials to handle waste manually. Commissioner Garg has now approved transferring the contracts to the next-lowest bidder to ensure proper waste management and compliance.
