GVMC Commissioner orders action to stop sewage flow into sea

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg has directed officials to take urgent measures to prevent untreated sewage from reaching the sea.

During an inspection of the Sagar Nagar Sewerage Pump House in Zone-III on Friday, Mr. Garg noticed sewage from the main drain flowing directly into the sea. Expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of screening, he instructed Superintending Engineer Pallamaraju to install screens without delay and warned that negligence in sewage pumping would invite strict action.

The Commissioner also ordered inspections of all 24 drains discharging into the beach and asked engineering officials to prepare plans to connect them to the Appugar STP. He stressed that de-silting, installation of screens, and laying of pipelines must be carried out systematically to ensure only treated sewage is released. He further urged officials to create awareness among citizens against dumping waste into drains.

GVMC Chief Engineer P.V.V. Satyanarayana Raju, Chief Medical Officer E.N.V. Naresh Kumar, AMOH Ravikumar, and Executive Engineers Aedukondalu and Sudhakar accompanied him during the inspection.

Meanwhile, civic teams have been pressed into service to clear the damage caused by Thursday’s heavy rain and gales, which uprooted 168 trees across the city. So far, 145 have been cleared using eight teams and 17 JCBs, while efforts are on to remove the remaining 23. Nine electric poles were also damaged but were restored quickly to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Zonal Commissioners, along with the Public Health, Mechanical and Horticulture wings of GVMC, are monitoring the clearance works.
