GVMC identifies 21 vending zones under Operation Lungs initiative

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has identified 21 vending zones across the city, with additional zones under consideration, officials said. The zones have been submitted to the Government as part of efforts to regulate street vending while ensuring public convenience.

P.M. Satyaveni, UCD Project Director of the GVMC Town Planning Department, spoke on the sidelines of GVMC’s ongoing Operation Lungs initiative. She said eligible street vendors recognized under the Andhra Pradesh State Street Vendors Act and Street Vending Scheme guidelines would be provided alternate arrangements to continue their businesses.

“Operation Lungs aims to remove temporary encroachments on footpaths, roads, and major junctions. This ensures public safety and convenience while safeguarding the livelihoods of street vendors,” Ms. Satyaveni said. “GVMC is identifying eligible vendors and taking steps to provide them with business opportunities and livelihood benefits.”

She appealed to street vendors and the public not to believe misconceptions, rumours, or false information circulating about the initiative. Following instructions from GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, zonal commissioners have already held meetings with Street Vending Committee members at zonal offices.

“The main objective of Operation Lungs is to maintain city cleanliness and provide facilities for citizens, pedestrians, and vehicle users. At the same time, we aim to protect the business interests of street vendors so that they can operate without inconvenience,” she added.
