GVMC Launches AI Traffic Management Pilot in Visakhapatnam

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has launched “Project SARTHI”, an AI-based Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) aimed at improving traffic regulation and public safety.

Commissioner Ketan Garg announced the pilot during a review meeting at GVMC headquarters. The meeting was attended by Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shankha Brata Bagchi, senior police officials, and GVMC officers.

The pilot project follows three stages: Conception (completed), Field Pilot (successfully executed by six companies), and DPR Preparation (underway). Under MP M. Bharat’s guidance, ITMS has been implemented at five junctions with five partner companies: Brihaspati Technologies, Meta Fusion Technology, Data Cars, NEC, and CMS Computers Ltd.

Pilot locations include Sampath Vinayaka Temple, Urvashi Junction, R&B Junction, Gopalapatnam Petrol Bunk Junction, and Endada Junction. The system integrates Facial Recognition (FRS), Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), and Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) to enhance monitoring and safety.

Company representatives presented their findings and submitted DPRs. Officials instructed the inclusion of additional safety measures and initiated RFP tenders for wider implementation.

Police Commissioner Bagchi said, “The project has begun with five companies across five zones. Based on results, it will expand citywide.” Vehicle number plate and red-light violation data will be monitored closely over the next month to guide expansion.

The meeting also saw the participation of GVMC Chief Engineer P.V. Satyanarayana Raju, Chief City Planner A. Prabhakar Rao, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), and other senior officials, reflecting a joint effort to strengthen Visakhapatnam’s traffic management system.
