GVMC proposes mini weather radars, observatories for hyperlocal forecasting
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has proposed installing mini weather radars and a network of online observatories to improve hyperlocal weather monitoring in Visakhapatnam. Officials have submitted the proposal to the India Meteorological Department.
Civic officials say the system will strengthen short-range forecasts and support timely public alerts. Weather conditions often differ widely across the city.
Authorities are acting as weather patterns grow more erratic due to global warming. Visakhapatnam has a population of over 2.5 million and nearly 1.5 million vehicles. Pollution levels are also rising.
Experts say the city’s geography makes the situation tougher. The sea lies on one side, and hills surround the other parts. During low-wind conditions, the city traps pollutants. Emissions from port operations and industries add to the problem. Rapid urbanisation and shrinking green cover have intensified the urban heat island effect in several areas during summer.
Rainfall and temperature variations within the city underline the need for local monitoring. Rain in one area often misses nearby localities. Temperatures also vary between coastal zones, the city centre, and the airport region.
Meteorologists say radar systems must track humidity, air pollution, wind speed, and sudden atmospheric shifts for accurate assessment.
Officials explain that a mini weather radar can monitor atmospheric changes within an 80 km radius. This helps predict cloudbursts, heat waves, and air quality fluctuations. One mini radar costs between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh.
At present, IMD operates a Doppler Weather Radar at Kailasagiri. It covers about 500 km and mainly tracks cyclones and large cloud systems. A city-focused mini radar would allow continuous data collection and location-specific alerts.
GVMC has also proposed setting up five to six online observatories across the city. These units will provide real-time data. Each observatory may cost up to Rs 5 lakh. GVMC and IMD are currently holding discussions.
