GVMC to Roll Out Project SARTHI to Ease Traffic Congestion

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is preparing to launch Project SARTHI (Systematic Augmented Radial Traffic and Hoop Induction) to address growing traffic congestion in the city.

During a review meeting at the City Operations Centre on Tuesday, GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg met members of a specially constituted committee. He also held discussions with representatives of agencies involved in the tender process.

Officials said GVMC has invited tenders to install an Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) at 90 junctions. In addition, the corporation plans to implement an Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) at 101 junctions. Both systems will be connected to the City Operations Centre. Three agencies participated in the process and qualified at the pre-qualification stage.

The authorities instructed the bidders to conduct a Proof of Concept (PoC) at three selected junctions. Meanwhile, a committee will oversee the exercise. The panel includes GVMC Additional Commissioner (Finance) S.S. Varma, Chief Engineer P.V.V. Satyanarayana Raju, VMRDA Chief Engineer Vinay Kumar, GVMC Superintending Engineer Edukondalu, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Praveen, Professor Durga Rani of Andhra University, and Public Health Superintending Engineer Kameswara Rao.

Once GVMC finalizes the tenders, it will implement the ATCS at 101 junctions. The system will enable real-time signal adjustments based on traffic density. Furthermore, it will support coordinated signal management during VIP movements.

GVMC will also deploy an AI-based ITMS at 90 junctions. The system will use ANPR and RLVD cameras to detect violations. As a result, authorities will issue e-challans automatically.

Senior officials from GVMC, VMRDA, the Traffic Police, and Andhra University attended the meeting.
