Heatwave Reduces Supply, Pushes Up Prices of Some Vegetables
Rising summer temperatures have started affecting the supply of vegetables to Rythu Bazaars, leading to an increase in prices of several items. At the same time, a few vegetables have become cheaper due to steady availability.
Tomato prices have gone up from ₹10 per kg a few days ago to ₹14 per kg on Thursday. Ridge gourd is now priced at ₹36 per kg, compared to ₹30 earlier. Okra has also become costlier, increasing from ₹26 to ₹30 per kg. Cauliflower prices have risen from ₹14 to ₹20 per kg, while cabbage has moved up slightly from ₹10 to ₹12 per kg.
Arrivals have reduced as the season is coming to an end. This is causing prices of some vegetables to rise,” an Estate Department official said.
Cluster beans have seen a sharp increase, going up from ₹54 to ₹64 per kg. Officials said these vegetables usually come from Ramabhadrapuram, but the supply has dropped significantly. “With the season ending, arrivals from Ramabhadrapuram have decreased a lot,” the official added.
However, not all prices are rising. Some vegetables have become cheaper in recent days. Ivy gourd has dropped from ₹30 to ₹26 per kg. Carrot prices have come down from ₹32 to ₹28 per kg. French beans are now ₹50 per kg, down from ₹54. Snake gourd prices have reduced from ₹64 to ₹60 per kg.
Cucumber prices have fallen from ₹22 to ₹18 per kg. Green chillies are now sold at ₹26 per kg, compared to ₹30 earlier. Capsicum prices have also decreased slightly from ₹44 to ₹40 per kg.
Meanwhile, onions and potatoes remain affordable at ₹18 and ₹10 per kg, respectively. Traders say the current trend may continue in the coming days, depending on the supply reaching the markets.
