IIPE Turns 10: Paving the Way for India’s Energy Transition
The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) celebrated its 10th Foundation Day, marking a decade of growth in academics, research, and influence in India’s energy sector. Over the years, the institute has emerged as a national think tank, driving innovation in petroleum, chemical engineering, and clean energy technologies.
During the event, Prof. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Director of CSIR–Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), urged students to pursue innovation and translate patents into practical instruments that benefit society. Discussions were also held on a potential memorandum of understanding (MoU) between IIPE and CSIO to strengthen collaborative research.
Reflecting on the institute’s journey since its foundation stone was laid by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in 2016 and the Bhoomi Poojan performed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024, IIPE Director Prof. Shalivahan announced the forthcoming move to the permanent campus, a significant step in expanding its academic and research capabilities.
IIPE has diversified into natural hydrogen, alternative fuels, and clean energy technologies while fostering global collaborations to support India’s energy transition. Its “Panchamrit” pillars—Projects, Patents, Publications, Partnerships, and Ph.D.—highlight the institute’s growing research ecosystem.
Awards presented during the event included the Best Faculty Award 2025, awarded to Prof. Ramunaidu Randhi; the Best Employee Award 2025, presented to Mr. Somesh Katta; and Academic Merit Awards, recognizing top-performing students. The celebrations coincided with Diwali, adding a festive spirit of light and renewal.
Describing the 10-year milestone as the beginning of IIPE’s “adolescence,” Prof. Shalivahan said the institute is now poised to assume a leadership role in India’s sustainable energy future.
